What is glamping?
A quick search online reveals a few definitions:
“A form of camping involving accommodation and facilities more luxurious than those associated with traditional camping.” Oxford Dictionaries
“Going camping, but with glamour. A combination of the two words. It’s like regular camping , but with nicer things than usual, being warmer, and more comfortable. Glamping isn’t done by usual outdoor types who climb mountains.” Urban Dictionary
That last definition is my favourite, although I think glamping IS done by outdoor types who climb mountains. What else is a mountain hut? Mountain huts or alpine huts are used by mountaineers, climbers and hikers and provide a range of services from simple sleeping accommodation to very nice huts with guardians who provide food, drinks and other services.
Really, What IS it?
Glamping is a comfortable alternative to tent camping. For many people, their first camping trip is their last. Insects, leaking tents, confining sleeping bags, hard floors and half-cooked food can put a person off camping for life. Glamping allows you to have the best of both worlds; the comfort of real beds and amenities while retaining a connection with the great outdoors. It allows you to focus on your holiday and not the practicalities of sleeping comfortably, staying warm and dry or cooking.
What types of accommodation are offered for glamping?
Apart from yurts anything quirky and unusual could qualify as glamping accommodation, for example.
- Caravans
- Barns
- Cabins & huts
- Pods, Domes & Cubes
- Eco Lodges
- Tents
- Tree houses
Are there other names for glamping?
There are a few alternatives but none that have really caught on in the same way.
- Luxury camping
- Glamorous camping
- Boutique camping
- Comfortable camping
- Posh camping
Personally, I feel the last one, “posh camping” is a much better term. Until the term glamping is explained to you, it is meaningless. Posh camping, on the other hand, immediately conjures up images of comfort and even a little decadence, but still with exposure and connection to the outdoors. Whether you glamp, camp in comfort or camp posh, you can enjoy the thrill and adventure of camping with many, if not all, the comforts of home.
Glamorous Camping in Shropshire
Our three yurts are beautiful examples of posh camping at its finest. Located right on the Powys-Shropshire border in the Welsh Borderlands, Yurts Bronwyn, Carianne and Nanny Iris are fully furnished with real beds, warm duvets, power, lighting and heating. The shared camp facilities include a kitchen, breakfast room, lounge and full bathroom. Luxury camping indeed.
